SooToday had an interesting article yesterday concerning bike paths. Research shows that in the long run (pun intended), walking, cycling and public transit infrastructure will alleviate congestion. Initially car use will be heavier, so eventually residents look for alternatives. It is a "learned" response, not necessarily intuitive. (Look it up or click on this link:)

As a cyclist I am very aware of a growing problem in this city that nobody wants to admit: distracted, impaired and speeding drivers, often all at the same time. Everyday you read about crashes mostly at intersections. Often pedestrians and cyclists are seriously injured or killed. If you put a dollar amount on the average crash it quickly adds up.
