As a cyclist I am very aware of a growing problem in this city that nobody wants to admit: distracted, impaired and speeding drivers, often all at the same time. Everyday you read about crashes mostly at intersections. Often pedestrians and cyclists are seriously injured or killed. If you put a dollar amount on the average crash it quickly adds up. Yet it would be so easy to solve the problem with photo radar. I’m not talking about the timid approach currently being considered with locations of the radar announced with signs and warnings. No, we need five or six “stealth” radars that are moved around town where you can’t see them. It won’t take long for motorists to get the message and we will see a dramatic drop in speed and crashes. We will also be able to give the local cops a chance to focus on other crimes and reduce the budget increase they are looking for.
