A little update on my shamrock. I followed the suggestions from a couple of people in here and it seems to be bouncing back nicely! I trimmed out the dead growth, added a bit of soil, and have been watering it consistently. Looking much better than before. Thanks all!

We just rescued this Shamrock for someone who’s been out of town for a few weeks — hoping to bring it back to life somehow. You can see there are a few leaves still green. We did some googling but any tips are welcome!

Does growing grass count as gardening? We recently had some asphalt dug up and turned into a proper backyard space at our house. What you see is mostly loam fill with a bit of topsoil. More topsoil is on its way. On Monday evening, I noticed rain was coming this week, so I got out my spreader and a giant bag of seed I had lying around and got to work. Now the rainy weather is doing the work. There is still a layer of topsoil coming to finish …

With colder weather on its way remember to remove your hoses from house spigots and drain them. This will save a costly leak caused by a pipe burst.

To update you all — we ended up getting a London Plane—a type of sycamore that is more common in Southern Ontario. The landscaping company had 3 of them left over after installing a bunch on Bay Street, so we got a good price. We were especially interested because these are already quite large—16 feet tall! Excited to get it planted in our backyard!
Not a great photo, but believe me it’s a nice tree!

Looking for recommendations / thoughts: We are planning some backyard changes and we'd like to plant a tree. We have a small-ish property downtown and we would like a tree native to the area that will grow tall, not wide. It will get sun about 3/4 of the day. Something that grows pretty quick is a plus 😊 We are generally excluding evergreens but I do really like white pines. Otherwise, we considered sugar maple and paper birch.
