This father's day, we headed to the beautiful Nottingham North 3-D range on St Joseph's Island. The kids especially had a great time hiking through the bush and taking their best poke at foam warthogs, grizzlies, giant snakes, and jack-a-lopes.
Estimating the distance to the target and compensating for the trajectory is a great challenge. Even finding your footing on challenging terrain is part of the fun.
We're blessed to have great 3-D …

Know a highschooler who should try archery? We love bringing archery to the schools, like we just did at Echoes-des-Rapides (pic 2). Highschool students (and grade 8s) can start training now for the teams heading to the Ontario championships next year - we have an Intro to Archery night this Sunday. Reach out if you'd like to claim a spot :)
We can be found at arrowsinmotion.com, emailed at arrowsinmotion@hotmail.com, or messaged on Facebook …

We are so freaking proud of these kids.
We had 14 Algoma youth attend the Ontario highschool archery championships - plus our Northwestern addition from Dubreuilville.
CASS is bringing home the Gold team banner (!!!) and Superior Heights was just 15 points behind them for the Silver.
Everyone represented the north with class & had a great learning experience, and several posted strong scores & earned medals. Awards are given to the top …

Goals. Back in September, I set a goal of scoring a 300 (out of 300) at the Ontario indoor archery championships.
I developed a training plan and a list of short-term goals to aim for along the way. I started with shooting from close range. When I'd shot two perfect scores in a row, I stepped back another metre. In a few months' time, I was shooting at competition distance.
I did some strength and mobility training, ate a little better, …

FAQ: Frequent Archery Question: What stops the arrows?
Inside many archery targets, you'll find hundreds of thin foam layers compressed together (bright orange in this case). Instead of shooting into the foam, the arrow slides between the layers and is stopped by the friction with minimal damage to the foam.
This creates targets that will hold up to thousands of shots.
The example layers in the pic are actually quite a bit thicker than …

🎯 Jacob is the first SPACES host I met. When we spoke, he shared his mission for archery: He and Lana aim to provide an alternative option for kids who find themselves not thriving in organized league sports.
Kudos to the duo for building a supportive, positive community and sharing their highly specialized knowledge and enthusiasm in this space.
A great shot!

"Remember when I had to take a walk to collect my arrows?"
The road to the bullseye started off a bit rocky for our friend Diamyn. Hyper-mobile joints make this sport, with its focus on balance and stability, a challenge. The "standard" forms and techniques lead to arrows landing in mysterious places.
But with tenacity & creativity, Diamyn stuck with it and found ways to make it work.
Strength improved.
Pain-free shooting created …

Q: What happens when you shoot one arrow INSIDE another one...during a provincial championship???
Answer: You take a picture! And both arrows get scored the same, based on the location of the first one. It happened twice this past weekend. Good shooting folks!
(The results from the championship are still unofficial but once they're verified we should have a host of medals coming to the Sault :) )

What's the difference between a traditional wooden bow and a modern compound bow?
Let's start with a longbow (pic 1). This is as simple as they come - the bow is basically a "C" shape. This technology goes back a long, long time. (The exact number changes everytime the archeologists discover something new, err old, but let's say "over 70,000 years".)
Then there's the recurve. Still essentially a wooden stick and a string, but notice how …

This is crazy: archers from Algoma claimed 15 (!) medals at the provincial IFAA championships!
Well done to everyone who trained and put themselves out there. We're super proud of ya! ( Whether you're an Arrows In Motion shooter or not 😆 )
Asher - Gold U13 Compound Boys
Mack - Silver U13 Compound Boys (hes mistakenly in U10 on the website, waiting for it to be fixed)
Neil - Silver U15 Compound Boys
Bryson - Bronze U15 Compound Boys …

Look at all those Canadian flags! We are extra, extra proud of Algoma's own Lochlyn Good. The Lancaster shoot is an absolutely massive competition drawing archers from all over the world. These memories will stick with her forever.
Lochlyn fell in love with archery while still in elementary school, but only recently started practicing with barebow equipment. The difference between compound shooting and barebow is something like switching from …

After dedicating themselves in classes, these ladies were ready to shoot their first provincial competition on Sunday!
Since travel can be dicey in the winter, the Ontario Indoor Championships is hosted at ranges across the province, as long as registered judge is on hand. The judges submit scores to Archery Ontario throughout the week, so these two should know how they placed in about 7 days.
Regardless of the medal standings, I hope …

Are you a perfectionist about bow tuning and maintenance? Or more of a "set it and forget it" type of archer?
Here's Lana showing a group of compound bow shooters the basics of using a bow press, string and cable installation, peep sight tying, and D-loops.
The traditional recurve shooters were focused more on repairing string loop serving & arrow tuning.
...and everyone was interested in arrow fletching! Here's a fresh set of Easton …

Happy New Year! Can you guess where I'm shooting?
I'm feeling lucky to launch some arrows with no toque, no gloves today. Even stripped the sweater and long sleeves after a bit.
Got me thinking of watching my feathered arrows drill a tunnel through the torrential rain at Nationals in Amos, QC (2009 I think?); of snowshoeing and shooting the field archery trail in March; of provincial matches nearly getting cancelled due to sweltering heat …

The snow-mageddon from two weeks ago postponed our Bring-A-Friend night, but most folks were able to join us for the make-up date.
We had a great time with a soundtrack including punk covers of holiday classics 😆
What's your favourite music for an archery playlist?

I thought I'd play with a pinkie trigger on the compound rig for a bit. It certainly forces me to focus on follow-through! Definitely can't slouch or get sloppy with back tension (engaging the musles of the upper back to brace and follow through properly).
There's a bit of a learning curve and I don't think it will be my main choice but it's reinforcing some good habits.
