Here's a great article that lists the top 15 places in the home we sometimes forget to clean. Perfect time to add them to our regular cleaning routine and perhaps spring cleaning as well.

Don't forget to add dryer vents and ducts to your spring cleaning list. Should be done once per year. Check the outside vents as well as snow, ice or in my case, an errant snowblower can cause damage.

I spent some time this weekend repainting my kitchen. I originally had chosen a royal blue colour which just wasn't doing it anymore. So I decided to go with a nice burnt orange colour which I believe compliments and warms the room much better. I pulled the colour from a set of mats. Now I have an excuse to buy some new curtains and a few other accessories :)

With the recent time change, did you remember to change your batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors? 1. When tiling your shower area, consider using large format tiles. Always ensure to use a proper water proof tile backer board, prior to installing your tile. It is also extremely important to use a good quality grout, with sealers added, as this will seal better and they usually don’t shrink or crack. This provides better protection from leaks and damage.

As one of the first rooms guests see, the entryway has a big job: making a good first impression and keeping drop zone items tidy. Outfit your entryway with added function by creating a do-it-all storage system. Use furniture to perform double duty, such as a bench that also acts as a shoe caddy. The right combination of storage solutions (including wall hooks, lockers, and cubbies) will help your entryway stay organized and inviting.

Check your sump pumps and make sure they are working!! A flooded basement is costly and no fun at all. There are many types of pumps to choose from, each with their pros and cons. From a cost/benefit standpoint, a sump pump may just be the most valuable investment you can make in your home. I cannot stress the importance of planning before undertaking a large project such as building a home or cottage. Time and time again, I have seen people end up way over their budget and more often than not, it relates back to planning. If you want to build this year and haven't started the planning process yet, get going!

Carports a functional addition, just checked on two carports built last summer for two close friends and neighbours. They have both enjoyed a lot less snow removal as well as a drop in utility prices. Proper planning is essential as well as following municipal guidelines. Carports cannot have open sides and must be 48" from property line. We used helical piles on these carports with great results.

When I was looking to buy my first condo, I wanted something turn-key because I didn’t want to have to deal with drywall dust. But my dad spotted an opportunity in a fixer-upper and offered to help with renovations. He took a month off from his job and we worked with two contractors to transform a rundown unit into a place we could be proud of. This is a before/after from it 🚽

When picking out paint colours, I like to get the paint chips and put them on the wall of the room that I want painted, that way I can see the colour in all hours of the day.

I love a good reno. Our house was built in 1924 and came with a 6x6 ½’ bathroom + an awkwardly placed window and a really small claw foot tub. Every inch had to be negotiated. I love hauling tiles, demo'ing old sinks and trying to make the shower footprint as big as possible, given the limitations.

The most successful paint finishes are those where the surface was prepped correctly, manufacturer's directions followed, and the paint applied under the right temperature and conditions. Here's some tips to keep in mind before painting a surface: 1. Surfaces must be clean, dry and dull. 2. Prep correctly and take the time to sand. Of all the home improvement projects you can take on, there is one that far exceeds the rest in terms of return on investment. Replacing and upgrading the weatherstripping and caulking on your home is a low cost investment that will pay big returns in lower energy costs.

We are all battling snow and ice this winter. Buildup on our roofs can cause leaks and damage. Removal of snow and ice is sometimes necessary, but if not done properly can be just as damaging. Here's a link to an interesting article I read about the do's and don'ts of clearing ice dams.
