Think your eyes aren't sharp enough for archery? Im Dong-Hyun, a South Korean archer with multiple Olympic medals and world records, proves that vision isn’t the biggest factor in hitting the target. Despite being legally blind—his “good” eye is 10 times worse than normal—he competes at the highest level. What he sees at 20 yards is like what most of us see at 200 yards. Archery is more about form, consistency, and mental tenacity than it …

Is archery a good way to de-stress or meditate? Yes, 100%! Ask any shooter why they *really* spend time at the range 😄 Maybe you've heard of the kyudo practice of archery or the book "Zen in the Art of Archery". These are incredible, but we don't have to follow the Zen approach to feel better after letting a quiver full of arrows fly: ---Concentration: Archery demands complete concentration on the task at hand—on your form, on the …

Did you know that Archery Ontario's first-ever Coach of the Year is right here in Sault Ste. Marie? Lana's award was announced months ago and has finally arrived in hand. It is named after Joan McDonald, who was an absolute force among coaches in this country. Congratulations Lana, in this well deserved recognition of your dedication and coaching skill. Have you ever shot with Lana?

You know Robin Hood right? The guy famous for splitting an arrow by firing another one into the back of it? Today, we still call these destroyed arrows a robin hood. The two fused arrows are evidence of great focus, skill, strength and balance. They make a great trophy! Here's one from our class on Monday (zoom to see if it's right in the bull's eye too😁 ) Have you been there to hear the unmistakable sound and see this happen?

Huge congrats to Team Canada and coach Lana Perry (a co-host here!) for their impressive efforts at the World Archery 3D Championships. Competitors from across the country took their best skills to castle grounds in Slovenia where they shot at giant animal foam targets throughout the terrain. 🔗 More on SooToday, linked below.

Don't try this at home! Yes, the Swiss legend of William Tell sees the hero shooting an apple balanced on his son's head. That was different though: it was Tell's punishment for bold tyrannicide which inspired a revolution. Thankfully he was pretty good under pressure. (BTW, the instrument of choice in that story is usually a crossbow.) The tale goes back to the 1400s, but similar stories go back another couple hundred years. Who …

Have you ever made your own bow? This one was handcrafted right here in Sault Ste. Marie by Scott at Kirkwood Traditional. I love the contrasting cocobolo and canarywood. The colour of the latter has become richer and richer over the years. What materials have you used in homemade bows?
How do you think it shoots?

We had an absolute blast at the Halloween Support Benefit for Memphis this weekend! The young man himself showed off his accuracy against the hovering balls and flying balloon targets. We've been so happy that our inflatable range lets us safely bring archery to all kinds of events like this. It's been a super fun way to give people a taste of the sport.

One of the ways we love to promote archery is through fun local competitions. This shoot is a gathering of the inexperienced and the experienced, a place to learn from one another and build connections and community. The only thing you need is to have is equipment of your own, or some set up for you in one of our classes. Every shooter is going home with a prize. Please let us know if you have any questions at all!

First Post! Just testing this out with a quick intro: my partner Lana and I run archery classes and all sorts of events around Algoma. She's currently in Slovenia, coaching Team Canada at the World Championships. We're always happy to see old friends and new faces at the range :)
A quick pic of the fam looking mildly feral, with medals after a local shoot last year.
