I am planning on building some rough basement shelving this winter. 16in deep, spanning 12ft. Hefty storage shelving with 2x4 framing.

Instead of using blocking between shelves to carry the weight down, is it an ok idea to notch out my 2x4 vertical posts so that I can rest my shelving in the notches? Anything to be aware of here?
