Found the magic trick that removes stains (like rust and ink) from wood: oxalic acid, which is the main ingredient found in Bar Keepers Friend.

I can attest, I tried this and it works.

Yes. It changes the chemical compound of rust to something that is water soluble, and then you can just wash away most or all of the rust. I have used it on old wood I was trying to reclaim.

Never tried it with ink though, ... probably works with all sorts of things.
