My "go-to" wood for cabinet making is a veneer-core oak or birch plywood. The shop-grade of either variety gives a nice finished product with a good application of wood conditioner followed by a properly applied wood stain. Raw edges are finished with iron-on veneer, trimmed, and sanded. Most hardware stores will have a panel-saw available to cut 4' x 8' sheets lengthwise, and they will then fit into most SUV vehicles to transport your wood to your home. I drive a Toyota RAV4 and have no issue fitting 2' x 8' sheets with the hatch closed. If you need full size sheets, then you need a friend with a truck.
