I am sharing these photos I posted in a Facebook group of building in my childhood neighbourhood that still stand, but with different purposes. I grew up on Patrick Street in what was known as "Buckley". Before the centralization of shopping and commercial ventures, almost every neighbourhood had their share of corner stores and businesses. here is a montage of corner stores, grocery stores and businesses within walking distance of my house, ... …

The Highline Bridge - it's how folks used to get to work at the steel plant. I grew up hearing stories about it from my family. How about you? (Credits: SSM Public Library & Sault Museum)

On May 15th, 1957 Bill Haley and his Comets played to a sold-out crowd of 2,500 at the Memorial Gardens!
A Sault Daily Star article from Thursday, May 16th described the concert:
"A Loyal followers, rock and rollers and curiosity seekers filled 2,500 seats, shaking, vibrating and keeping time to the rhythmic, pulsating beat of rock and music. As the captivating strains progressed, they began to take hold of the more ardent followers who …

4,590 people rocked out to the songs of Canadian band Loverboy, who played at the Memorial Gardens on this day, May 13th, in 1982. Riding high off of their recent Juno Awards sweep, the band played in the Sault as part of their Get Lucky tour. Tickets for the show cost $10.50 a piece and sold out two days before the concert.
After a well received opening set by Bryan Adams, Loverboy lead guitarist opened the show by telling his audience "I …

Today marks the 110th anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Lusitania. The Lusitania was torpedoed by a German U-Boat around 14:11, and sank in 18 minutes. The torpedo hit the starboard side of the ship just below the bridge, causing a list that made it difficult to launch the lifeboats safely. Out of 48 lifeboats, more than enough for all of the 1,960 people on board, only 6 were launched.
In total, 1,197 were lost, including Sault Ste. …

Many of the people of Sault Ste. Marie were shocked at the City’s decision to shutter a longstanding organization this month - The Sault Downtown Association. Shaping the downtown for 49 years, the DTA was responsible for many of the yearly events that have become staples in the community, including Moonlight Magic and the vibrant downtown street parties and sidewalk sales held every summer. They made their mark through community events, but …

If you haven't been on a Jane's Walk, I highly recommend it. Each walk is very different and always informative.
The Simpson St. heritage tree walk is always incredible, learning about the very old trees growing around Bishophurst.
I'm also interested in the Summit & Bruce hill neighbourhood walk, and the Clergue industries walk (with Jo Bumbacco, who shares some cool stuff with this space from time to time)

Jane’s Walk 2025 will bring stories, history, and art to city streets
