As we move further into the fall season, Canadians and Americans gather to commemorate the disastrous maritime accident in recent history.
The SS Edmund Fitzgerald was a Great Lakes freighter that tragically sank in Lake Superior on November 10, 1975, during a severe storm. All 29 crew members were lost in the disaster. The ship was en route from Superior, Wisconsin, to a steel mill near Detroit, Michigan, carrying a full load of iron ore pellets.
The wreck was discovered in two large pieces on the lake floor, just north of Whitefish Point. The exact cause of the sinking remains a mystery, but it has been the subject of much speculation and investigation.
The tragedy was immortalized in Gordon Lightfoot’s song “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” which brought widespread attention to the event.
In his autobiography (which I suggest you pick up and read) Lightfoot, he remembers that fateful night and recalls an article in Newsweek magazine which helped him in his research and eventual recording The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
On the anniversary, people gather in Detroit at The Maritime Sailors Cathedral as the church bell rings twenty nine times for the crew that was aboard during that fateful night.
Sadly, Gordon LIghtfoot passed away on May 1, 2023 at the age of 84.
