Interesting proposal, I'm not sure how to feel about it. It would unify the vision for downtown, for better or worse. A council focused on downtown could offer a more unified vision even if there was less unity under that vision. Future councils could choose to neglect downtown and there would be no DTA as a backstop. DTA businesses would lose their independent voice.
For all of its 23-year existence, SooToday - Village Media’s headquarters have been proudly downtown. Whether run by the city or by businesspeople, our business core must never be allowed to rot. When a city lets its downtown fall apart, everyone lives in suburbs of nothing.
